2 September 1895 — Talygarn, nr. Llantrisant, Glamorgan
Monday. 2nd September [1895]. I went by train to Duffryn to see Lady Aberdare. It was Mason’s day a holiday & a crowded day for travelling so that after changing at Pontipridd & at Aberdare I was nearly an hour after time & the journey took 2 instead of 1 hour. I had expected to stay a day or two with Lady Aberdare but by some mistake she thought I only meant to stay the day. Maria & Nela returned to B. Dene. Richard went to town. Pamela Bruce met me at the Mountain Ash station & drove me to the house. It was the first time Lady Aberdare & I met since we had lost our husbands– It was trying to us both. We sat & talked of them till lunch & then afterwards sat out in the garden. It was a lovely hot day & the hills were beautiful—& it made it even sadder– We all sewed & talked & at 5 had tea & then Pamela took me to the station & I started back to Talygarn & got there at 7.20– Found Miss Clara Thomas (an old friend of Henry’s) there & her companion Miss Lloyd. Miss Thomas is rich & does much good in Wales– She is abt 45 with a kind voice & gentle ways. I had not seen her for many years.
