3 September 1895 — Talygarn, nr. Llantrisant, Glamorgan
Tuesday. 3rd September [1895]. Mrs Godfrey Clark gave a schoolfeast to children at Pontipridd & to some of the old workhouse people. So we all went out after lunch to help to entertain them. There were also workhouse children. One heard many sad tales. One young woman from the workhouse had lost her husband & 2 children in one week & had not recovered her mind since the shock. She was quiet but dazed & remembered nothing. The sight of the country & of the children running & playing roused her attention a little & she said she knew she had done the same once & she smiled & looked happy—but when we asked her where she had lived a pained look came over her & she said “I don’t remember!”– There was an old man of 83 who said when he was a lad of 10 he had known my father at King’s Castle near Cardiff & had often run messages for him– He was quite pleased to find I was his daughter. There was another man who had worked at Dowlais but [not] since my father’s time. There was an old woman in a white cap with a tat over it in the old style who could only speak Welsh. There was a little jolly mulatto child—there was one who had been born blind– All were happy & enjoyed themselves. I helped the children’s tea & we all did our best to amuse them & they drove back in large breaks to Pontypridd very happy. The weather threatened rain but it luckily kept off.
