6 September 1895 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 6th [September 1895]. Left London by 10.30 from Victoria Station & arrived at Dorking 11.30. Mrs Rate & Enid met me at the station & drove me to Milton Court. I walked in the garden till luncheon with Mr Rate. Their son Lachie is here—& also a Mr Freer. After four o’cl tea we drove in the Victoria Mrs Rate, her Enid & I to call or Lord & Lady Farrer & found them sitting at tea in an arbour in their lovely garden. They showed us their garden which is full of lovely flowers & they have quantities of doves flying about & coming down to be fed. Coming back to Milton we stopped at Rokefield & Mrs Rate & I payed Miss Barclay a visit and walked home from there. Enid R. drove home. On our walk we passed a small farm house lately bought by Mr Rate which took my fancy so much that I proposed to hire it & where I hope to make my sister Maria often come as a resting place. It is inexpensive & I think I can manage it. The weather is very hot & we sat out of doors in the evening.
