7 September 1895 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Saturday. 7th September [1895]. There was a heavy thunderstorm at 4.30 this morning whereby the air was greatly cooled. We had breakfast out of doors. Mrs Rate had a large party to lunch Adl Heneage & his sister Lady Essex—Mrs Beaumont & her girl Lady Haldon & her 2 girls. I was glad to meet the Adl again. I had known him in the good old Constantinople days when he commanded a ship. When they were all gone Mrs Rate, Enid & I went for a drive. Called at Fredley to see Mrs Kay but she was not visible so we drove on Box Hill a beautiful drive & a lovely evening. Mrs Rate telegraphed this morning to invite Louis Du Cane for the Sunday & he came before dinner. We sat in the loggia after dinner & Enid Rate sang in the dining room close by.
