8 September 1895 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 8th [September 1895]. Mr Rate, Louis & I walked to Westcott church. A nice country church with an old fashioned service. In the afternoon Mr George MacDonald & his wife came to call. Louis & I had been helping Alice to cut down branches of trees to make a sheltered spot to sit in. MacDonald, the writer of many books is a fine old man with a flowing white beard. His wife a nice little old lady with gentle mousey manners. I had to go off & leave them as I had settled to go to Fredley to see Mrs Kay. Louis drove me there in the poney cart & we got there about 5. Mrs Kay is in her room having been very ill the last fortnight & only just the last 2 days out of her bed. I sat with her an hour while Louis walked in the garden & then he drove me back to Milton.
