1 October 1895 — Salisbury
Tuesday. 1st October [1895]. We got up early & went off to the Stonehenge & drove to it. Sketched a little. It was a much colder day than hitherto & as we started to drive back it came on to pour with rain. We passed thro’ Amesbury where Queen Guinevir is said to have taken refuge in a convent when she fled from the Court. We got our lunch at 1.30 & then went off to the cathedral & went over it & stayed to the service. Ola met us before service. She had been to work for the 1st time at the Infirmary this morng & seemed to like it. Augusta & I sketched in the street a little & then went back to the Inn—had tea & started abt 5 for Templecombe & arrived at Inwood abt 8. Found Merthyr was still in bed from the results of a fall out riding. Theo was with him & both had dined so Augusta Gregory & I dined alone. Merthyr had had a slight operation today on his leg to cure a tumour which was the result of the blow.
