30 September 1895 — Winchester
Monday. 30th [September 1895]. After breakfast we set off to see the Cathedral & also enquired for my nephew Reggie Alderson, but he was going out with the school volunteers & could not come to me—so I went up to the station at 12 & waited till he arrived there & had a few words with him before he started for Romsey. Got back late for lunch. At 3 we went to Cathedral services & then drove to St Cross—& went round that. Came back & had tea with Canon Gordon—Lord Aberdeen’s son, & his wife Lady Ellen. Then left by 5 train for Salisbury & put up at the Angel Inn. After dinner we walked round the cathedral by moonlight & went to find Ola Du Cane who is come to learn to be a sick nurse at the Infirmary here. We found her & sat with her & then went back to the Inn to bed. I must not forget that I saw at the County Hall at Winchester what is called King Arthur’s round table hung in there.
