29 September 1895 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 29th [September 1895]. Packed—arranged & worked & then after lunch we sat in my bedroom & I read aloud to Augusta from the Quarterly Review just to calm my nerves & steady myself. We had tea at 4.30 & then Augusta & I went off to the Waterloo station & down to Winchester. Arrived there about 8 & put up at the George Inn—& so I left the old home—where I had lived since and where altho’ I had many happy days & hours I have suffered so much. I went into Henry’s room for the last time & felt like a stone again as I did when he died last year—& I seemed so small & helpless—and so closes another chapter of my life– We walked round the cathedral by moonlight.
