24 October 1895 — 40 Half Moon Street
Thursday. 24th [October 1895]. I went to Savile Row at 10 & then took a walk up to Wimpole St to enquire after Sir Henry Thompson– I met him walking with Mr Herring & walked with them round by Hyde Park & Piccadilly to Savile Row by 1 o’cl lunch. This morning’s paper has the news of Lord Waterford’s suicide. I was much shocked as yesterday a letter from my sister Blanche from Ireland she said she had lunched with him at Curraghmore. That he was depressed—& was to see another Dr. I told Sir H. Thompson I thought it such a mean thing to do at wh he said he had thought out the subject & thought it quite allowable if one suffered much & was hopelessly ill & he kept a pistol at the head of his bed & was sure he shd do it if he were in that case—& I said—if he did he might be sure I should say of him that he was a very mean man! I dont believe he would dare do it really. He has not the courage. Nous verrons. After lunch I walked with the girls in search of a stair carpet—& found one at Cowtans in Oxford St then they walked off together & I went to Berkeley Square to try & find Mrs Borwick & arrange with her to offer to take Eda Alderson abroad this winter. She was not in so I went on foot to Harley St to keep my appointment with Dr Chamberlain at 4 & returned at 4.30 & saw Mrs Borwick. She was in & we settled she shd invite Eda to join her in Italy at Christmas– I went off to Victoria St & found Eda & the luggage there. But I was just too late for the 4.55 train & we had to go to Dorking by 5.20 & reached there 6.40. Took a cab & drove up to Milton Ct to stay with the Rates. Found Mr & Mrs Willie Bruce there & their 2 children & to my surprise Lina Duff Gordon– Enid Rate sang in the eveng.
