10 January 1896 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 10th January [1896]. Nela came to call for me & she & I went off with bag in hand to Victoria Station & went by 10.30 train to Dorking & got to the Farm abt 12. We found Bertha & Roberts hard at work scrubbing floors laying down carpets &c &c & he also arranged furniture. In the afternoon Nela & I walked to Milton to call on the Rates. Mrs R. was in bed. I sat with her & had tea with her & then Nela & I walked back to Springfield. It was pitch dark & snowing but they lent us a lantern without wh we should not have found our way. After dinner we hung pictures &c—& went to bed early & so I slept there for the first time & in a bed which had been Henry’s bed when he lived at 130 Piccadilly. When we left for Madrid he gave the bed to my sister Kate & I have bought it back from her.
