22 January 1896 — Springfield Lodge, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Wednesday. 22nd [January 1896]. Painted fan & Maria read aloud. At 1.30 we 2 walked to Milton & lunched with Mrs Rate who was in the long drawing room. She then sent us in to Dorking to go to town by 3.41 train. Nela & Issie met us at the station & we all came up together. At Sutton we got a newspaper with the startling news of the death of Prince Henry of Battenberg of fever at Sierra Leone. A terrible misfortune to the Queen & poor Princess Beatrice. I parted with the Du Canes at the station & came home to 3 Savile Row. Found Monty expected at home tonight.
