25 February 1896 — Oxford
Tuesday. 25th February [1896]. I packed my maid off back to town & left the Hotel abt 10.30. Went to call on Sir H. Acland to thank him for all his kindness—but it was too early to see him so I took a walk to buy some photos for Css Pisani & to look for flowers for Sophy. Just as I had given up the search in despair, I came on the market & there found what I wanted tulips & daffodils & carried off a handful which I took to her for her own bedroom– I sallied forth again to buy her glasses to put them in & by that time we had to rush off to Magdalen to see the President Warren who had promised to show in the hall where is the portrait of Lord Selborne. Sophy returned home & I to Sir Henry Acland to take leave of him. We talked of Henry & I told him much of his political life of which he knew nothing—having only known him as an archaeologist & he was much touched & said very kind things to me. I had to hurry back to Stamford House & found them all at luncheon. Afterwards I paid Sister Emily a visit & then sat with Sophy in her room talking till 4 when we went to the drawing room & had tea & then Sophy drove me down to the station in a hansom & I left for London by the 4.25 train & went to Savile Row. Nellie Alderson dined with me.
