24 February 1896 — Oxford
Monday. 24th [February 1896]. I had a visit from old Miss Skene in the morning. She is an old lady who has done much quiet good work in the prisons. I had met her some years ago at Cardiff Castle. She is also a kind of mother to many undergraduates. At 12 I went to fetch Sophy & we went to Sir Henry Acland & he drove us in his carriage to the Taylor buildings to show me the Marbles Henry had sent home from Nineveh & was introduced to the curator Mr Percy Gardner. I lunched with Mrs Palmer at Stamford House where Sophy lives with her aunt. I was allowed to see Sophy’s other Aunt “Sister Emily” who is bed ridden. The last remaining of Lord Selborne’s generation—& very like him in many ways. She had been a Protestant Sister of Mercy & overworked herself & become half paralysed. She has much a Lord Selborne’s sweet gentle manner. After lunch we returned to Sir H. Acland & he drove with us to his pet Museum & he showed it to us in a cursory way as we had not much time to stop– Afterwards we took him home & with Polly Palmer Sophy’s cousin who accompanied us went to see more Colleges—& lastly Sophy & I drove to the Max Muller’s & paid them a visit & had tea with them– I returned to the Hotel & had a visit from George Montagu & Sophy joined me later at dinner & stayed talking in the evening till past ten.
