23 February 1896 — Oxford
Sunday. 23rd [February 1896]. I was ready at 10 in case Sophy fetched me to go to hear the University sermon—but she did not come till after 11 when we went to 11.30 service. A good sermon on fasting with which however, I did not agree. I walked back to the Hotel & Sophy came later & lunched with me. We then walked out together & called on Sir Henry Acland. He is over 80 & is feeble—said he is not well & therefore was deaf but said we were not to speak low or he could not hear us. We asked him where I should find the basrelief sent by Henry from Nineveh. He offered to take me tomorrow to see it & said he was the only one of the 3 curators of the Museum (original Curators) now alive & he himself had placed it & would like to show it to be himself & offered to take me tomorrow at 12. He showed me a cast of the black obelisk he had in his house which he said he had taken in lieu of a fee from                for doctoring him when he had the gout. The house was full of curious reminiscences of interesting things & people. We went on to see Magdalene College—& saw all over it—hall—chapel library—then to call on the President of All Souls & Mrs Warren—& he took us into the chapel & gave us seats for the service. Beautiful music– The Anthem Beethoven’s Agnus Dei—beautifully sung & the boys’ voices were heavenly. I went back to the hotel. Coming out of chapel—a young student came up & spoke to me & tho’ in the darkness & in his college cap I did not at first recognise him I found it to be George Montagu who with his mother & sister was staying at Ca’ Capello when Henry was taken ill & we left on that last journey. He promises to call on me tomorrow. I left Sophy at her home to rest & went on to the hotel. There Sophy joined me at 8.15 & dined with me & then she remained talking till 11. She lying on the sofa to rest. She spoke much of her new life & how she was trying to cheer her aunts—& the little rubs & difficulties—& she spoke of her dear father & how she missed him & I think it did her good to open her heart.
