1 March 1896 — Springfield Lodge, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 1st March [1896]. The girls went to church– Maria & I sat at home. I painted a fan for Blanche’s Irish work. Nelly & Louis rearranged the furniture & set things in order– Nelly & I returned to town by 5.20 train & on arriving at Savile Row found the house in excitement owing to the under housemaid having got the measles. I sent for the Dr who confirmed it & said we must isolate the case & that a nurse was therefore necessary & the servant ought not to start for Venice under 3 weeks. This is most provoking. Nelly also was in the infection & she decided not to go back to 40 Half Moon Street but to sleep in my room. We telephoned to Monty in case he did not care to return but he said he did not mind but he came in to talk of it after we were in bed & did not seem so indifferent.
