4 March 1896 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 4th [March 1896]. Blanche called for me & Nelly in her carriage & took us to the station & I & Bertha (cook) left for Milan by 11 train from Charing Cross station. Maria & Nela met me there. On getting to Dover I found that the boat was very full & there was no private cabin for me so I made up my mind to sit on deck near the private cabins. I heard a lady ask another friend if she would like to come into her cabin as she was alone. When the friend declined I thought “why should she not let me in” so I opened her door put on a bold face & asked her– After a moment’s hesitation & surprise she agreed & we subsided for the passage. She was kind & pleasant & I thanked her for her hospitality—told her my name & offered to be of use to her at Venice & found that she was a Lady Prescott. I helped her to land at Calais & to pass her luggage thro’ the douane & we separated with a cordial shake of hands. I got into the Bâle train & she into the Barritz train. I had a place to myself in the sleeping car—& dined from my basket.
