5 March 1896 — En route to Milan
Thursday. 5th [March 1896]. Breakfasted at Bâle. Had two very polite young Belgian men with me in the carriage. Cold & snow thro’ Switzerland but found fine weather in Italy & blessed sunshine which my heart had sighed for in vain all this winter. I got to Milan abt 5.20. Went to Hotel Cavour. Tea in my room & early to bed. There was a good deal of distant noise & I concluded it was caused by the nightly disturbances which have taken place since the news of the great defeat of the Italians at Adua by the Abyssinians.
