16 April 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 16th [April 1896]. I was busy in the morning arranging the downstairs apartment for Mrs Rate—her girl Enid & the fiance Mr Erskine. Had a visit from Mr & Mrs Austin. After lunch I went in gondola to the Eden’s garden & there met Mr & Mrs Humphry Ward—who did not either of them appear to me very amiable people. Css Pisani left & returned to Vescovana. I went to see her in the morning to take leave of her– There came there Missiaglia the jeweller & it was curious to hear how he spoke of the Emperor’s visit to Css Morosini—how she had got up her servants in state con teste dipinti as he called powdered hair & provided her porter with a false beard! The Rate party arrived at 6.30 from Grasse. At tea time I had a visit from the V. Consul Sr Zuccato.
