27 April 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 27th [April 1896]. Mrs Rate & Enid & Mr E. went out after breakfast in gondola. I wrote letters. Sigr Guggenheim brought 3 gentlemen—a Frenchman called M. & 2 of his friends to see the pictures here. He is writing an account of the pictures &c to be seen in Venice & wished to take notes. Also Herr Ludwig Passini came with his brother & sister in law M. & Mme Mendlessohn to ask to see the pictures. They came to the conclusion that my portrait by Passini is not a success & he wants me to sit again for it. At 12 I went down to the ground floor & sat with Mrs Rate till lunch time at ¼ to 1 & then I accompanied them to the station & saw them off by 2.5 train. At lunch I got a telegram from the Erskines saying their son need not return to London till 4th May so that he can go to the Lake of Como with Mrs Rate & Enid instead of going straight thro’ to London today. I returned home & rested for an hour & then went off in gondola to the Eden’s garden– There were quantities of Italians & English there. I only saw Edith Rucellai (née Bronson), & Css Brazzà & left at once & returned home to tea with Aline. Iduna Bel: came, also Lord & Lady Ripon & a Mr St Quentin. Lady Ripon was very kind & spoke much of Henry & their old friendship. They looked at the pictures & admired– Later Herr Passini came & we arranged I should sit to him at once for my new & third portrait. Aline & I dined at 8 & retired to bed directly after.
