7 May 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 7th [May 1896]. I went to sit to Passini in the morning. Came home at 12 & copied picture till lunch & again afterwards till 3.30. When we were sitting out in gondola, Aline’s aunt & cousins Mrs, Mr Ralph & Miss Dorothy Lambton came. I had a little talk with Mrs Lambton & told her how Cini wished Aline to get home as soon as possible & to start not later than 15th. She seemed taken aback but said she would try & manage it. They left & took Aline out with them– I went out with Lady Gregory & walked in Piazza & to Via 22 Margo. Came home to tea– The Lambtons came to tea & brought Aline back. Visits from Dss della Grazia & also Css Mocenigo of S. Stae with her 2 daughters. A thunderstorm threatened & they sent their gondola home to get the felse & they stayed some time waiting for it. At last it came & they started– I heard a scream & found the Css had fallen on our stairs. She said she was not hurt—but we were all alarmed– There was a tremendous thunderstorm before dinner & much rain. I put Aline to bed for her dinner.
