16 May 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 16th May [1896]. Augusta & I & Bertha (cook) went off to Vescovana by 9.50 train & got there just in time for lunch. Sr Besard the wood carver came also there from Venice. He is quite a working man & has a shop in Venice but has Italian artistic instincts & is a fine looking man. His family from the Cadore have been wood carvers from father to son. He had an accident & lost a finger in carving so now no longer works himself. After lunch we took coffee in the garden. The day was lovely. The roses are most beautiful. In the afternoon a great storm gathered round & in the evening it rained. D. Antonio read Boccaccio to us after dinner.
