7 June 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 7th June [1896]. Augusta Gregory & I went to morning service. Lunched at 1.15 & directly afterwards Count Seckendorff left us & went off to Trieste to meet the Empress Frederick who arrives there tomorrow on her way home from visiting her daughter in Greece. Coming out of church this morng a gentleman spoke to me who I found was Sir Charles Evan Smith & I asked him to come to tea which he did with Lady Evan Smith—a youngish & pretty woman—very pleasant. Afterwards came Ersilia Canevaro & her sister & then Miss Hogarth. The latter went out with us in gondola when Augusta & I went to the Eden’s garden—but she did not remain but went home from there. We had a quiet walk & talk with the Edens & came home for dinner—quiet evening & early bed.
