9 June 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 9th [June 1896]. A rainy morning & blew hard most of the day. I painted (copies) & after lunch seeing there was so much wind Augusta & I decided to take a walk. When we got outside the house we found it rained still so we turned back & then met Css Pisani coming to see us so we went upstairs & sat till suddenly the sun came out—the weather became lovely & we all 3 went out to Palazzo Labia to see the Tiepolo Frescoes which are that painter’s chef d’oeuvres. Then home had tea & Aug & I went out in sandolo to the Grand Hotel to call on the Evan Smiths who were not very well—he with a touch of gout. I invited him to come in the evening. Dined at 7.30 & had Css Pisani, Ct & Css Belmondo & Passini. Sir Charles came in the evening. All were very “in house” & screamed to their heart’s content—thereby rather astonishing Sir Charles who is not used to Italian voices.
