22 June 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 22nd [June 1896]. Read Dante before breakfast. Painted fan all the morning till lunch. Visits from Mme Le Mallier (the French Consul’s wife), Princess Cariati, Mr & Mrs Curtis & Mrs Burroughs of Florence who has a daughter very ill here. After tea when they were all gone I went out in gondola with Augusta & we went to Miss Hogarth’s studio & saw the beginnings of pictures she is going to paint & which seem to us very inferior– No artistic feeling. We went to the Piazza to arrange abt getting Nela’s pearl necklace made & enlarged & then took a short row but were driven in by a threatened storm & a few drops of rain. Worked in eveng & Augusta read some of the Greville Memoirs aloud to me. Weather not quite so hot.
