5 August 1896 — Villa Mier, Belluno
Wednesday. 5th [August 1896]. Rose at 3.30 & left Mier at 4 for the station & went by 5.55 train to Vescovana. It was a lovely morng when we started. The moon very bright & beautiful sunrise over the mountains. We changed at Montebelluna & went to Padua. Had to stay there 2 hours & Sophy took a carriage & under Roberts’ care went to see the town. I sat in the waiting room & had a long talk to the railway official to told me at once all his family affairs. How he was a Milanese—had a wife from whom he was separated & was very amusing—quite a character. At 10.50 we left by the Bologna train & reached Stanghella at 12—reaching the Countess’ for lunch. I rested in afternoon & had tea in my room. The Css took Sophy out to the farms & they had tea at the Petit Trianon. I took a walk in the garden with D. Antonio who was very smart in a black alpaca soutane & a new hat. Dined at 7 & went early to bed.
