14 September 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 14th [September 1896]. Typed—did accounts & was busy all morning. In the afternoon—to my surprise—Mrs Parnis was announced. I had known her at Constantinople & had not seen her since I left. Her husband had been in the employment of the Poste. I used to go fishing “tufas” with him at Therapia—& his wife used to come often to the Embassy to help me to make garments for the refugees after the Russo Turkish war. Her husband died after we left Constantinople of black typhus & his wife & daughters went to live at Malta. The eldest girl married & Bice the 2nd came today with her mother. Only yesterday Iduna & I had been talking of the Parnis’ & here they are today—& hardly a bit changed. When they left Mr & Mrs Curtis called & also Genl de Horsey & it was late when I got out & I only went to see Aspasie & hear of Olga—who is getting daily weaker. Wrote my recollections in evening.
