28 September 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 28th September [1896]. I went out at 11 this morning & went to the hotel to fetch Princess Charlotte & took her to Mainella’s again where she bought some of the sketches she saw & liked yesterday. I took her back to the Hotel went home to my lunch & then went off to the station with Jack & Nevil to see the Saxe Meiningen party off by 2 o’cl train. At 4.30 the Grand Duke & Dss Serge of Russia came to tea & to see the pictures & with them Princess Victoria of Battenberg the G. Dss’s sister & brought 2 ladies & a gentleman with them. The Grand Dss is very pretty & gentle looking & young– The G. Duke tall thin & rather stiff. I asked Olga Mocenigo & the sposi to come & unfortunately some English ladies came to call at that moment so we were rather a difficult party. I explained the pictures & showed the house—gave tea & they departed abt 5.30. I then went to Palazzo Mocenigo with Olga to arrange about lending servants & porcelain for the wedding breakfast. Ct Belmondo was there & had undertaken to arrange the whole thing for Olga Mocenigo. I came home at 6 very tired.
