12 October 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 12th [October 1896]. Typed. The Eshers came to lunch & I showed her all the house after lunch. She admired the kitchen & linen cupboards. Mrs Brown called directly after lunch & took Aspasie out with her. I went out in gondola with the Gordons to the Edens garden where they gave me lots of flowers—dahlias & roses. Had a large gathering here at tea– The Baroness de Pury, Css Canevaro & Maria Cozzi, Baroness Oesterreicher & Miss Congrieve, Mr & Mrs Beaumont, Mme Wiel & her brother Mr Lawley & his wife, Mr & Mrs Curtis, Css Olga Mocenigo & her sister Adine Windischgrätz, Mrs Fitzgerald Law. I was not feeling well & was tired out by dinner time so that I went to bed directly after dinner. The horror depicted in the countenance of some of my friends on finding Mrs Law here was amusing– She certainly did not look respectable today. Was painted over dressed & affected. All I hear of her confirms her queer appearance. She told me she is going away tonight.
