1 December 1896 — Springfield Farm, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Tuesday. 1st December [1896]. Saw the plumber abt laying on more water pipes—also Cantor abt warming the greenhouse. Gave last directions to GG & left Springfield by 11.43 train & got to London soon after 12. I found my sister Kate had arrived yesterday to stay with me & she was sitting with Monty when I arrived– After 5 o’cl tea I got a note from L. Du Cane telling me I had better go to consult Mr Rate ab¼ buying this house as he did not seem so certain abt it’s being advisable. So I went off in a hansom. I found him in his dressing room not being yet quite well. We began to discuss the question when Edward Duncannon arrived—wishing to see me abt opening a Sale of work on Thursday for Blanche if she cd not arrive in time from the country for it. So he was taken into consultation & between them they came to the conclusion that at £12500 to buy the house was not a bad investment & that I might do so. After leaving Mr Rate I went in to see his wife who was on the sofa & a little better in health & then I went home. Edward Duncannon dined with me & Kate & before dinner had a talk with Monty abt this house & he offered to remain with me & to pay £300 a year.
