30 November 1896 — Springfield Lodge, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 30th [November 1896]. Abt 11 o’cl Maria & I set off to drive to Limnerslease (near Guildford) to lunch at the G. F. Watts’ & to see Mrs Arthur Hanson who is staying with them. It was a lovely drive across the country & we had to make for the village of Compton & after enquiries found the house we were in search of. It is beautifully situated on a rise & is most comfortable & pleasant inside. “Signor” (Watts) was most cordial & kind—looked very well & seemed in excellent spirits. He told us he wd be 80 in Feby. We lunched at 1 & then Mrs Watts took me up to see Alice Hanson. I, altho’ prepared for it by the Watts, was much shocked at her appearance. She has grown utterly thin—all but her stomach which is an enormous size—& as she lay on the sofa—she had to have it supported by cushions. She says she suffers no pain only cannot stand. She is now stone deaf. She will not consult Drs for her tumour & is undergoing a faith cure “Christian science” they call. She firmly believes she will get well—& is full of energy & works hard for the Turkish Compassionate Fund. I sat with her for an hour & then had to leave her & returned to Signors studio where I found my sister Maria enjoying a talk with Signor. At 3.30 we set off again on our journey back to Spfield which we reached at abt 5.30.
