29 December 1896 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Tuesday. 29th [December 1896]. The whole Guest family went out hunting—father, mother & daughter. I spent the day alone very busy correcting type & writing letters & then after lunch I went out to walk & called on Mrs Bartley the wife of Merthyr’s new butler– Bartley had been butler to Lord Selborne & Sophy Palmer asked me to call on the wife—a handsome woman with 5 dirty screaming children. Walking home I met Freddie Guest who had been hunting & he begged me to go & stay at Canford– I told him unless I heard from his father that I was expected I should return tomorrow to town. At dinner time I recd a telegram from him telling me to come tomorrow so I decide to go there.
