9 January 1897 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 9th [January 1897]. I walked to 1 South Crescent at 12 o’cl to see Mrs Hills the Board school mistress & found her in great trouble, her husband always mad drunk she had left him & was hiding from him. I sympathised & promised to do all I could to help her. After lunch Miss Oswell came & I began to go thro’ with her Henry’s MS which she has type written for me. She read aloud to me while I held the MS. We worked in the library till tea. Nela & Louis DC. came to tea also Augustus Alderson & Nevil Gordon– Miss Oswell dined with me & worked again in the evening.
