4 February 1897 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 4th [February 1897]. I painted fans in the studio in the morng & went at it again after lunch. Lady Selborne came there to see me. Sophy went out driving at 3– Lady Alwyn Compton called on me also Mrs Edward Thesiger & Mrs Holford. After 4 the carriage returned for me & I went to join Sophy who was paying Lady Granville a visit at Kensington Palace where the Queen has given her appartments & we drove on to the U.S. Embassy to see Mrs Bayard. We found many people there & did not stay long. But Mr Bayard was called in especially to see us. He insisted on giving Sophy a dose of some medicine wh had been recommended him & made her drink it there & then! Nevil Gordon arrived this morng to stay till Saty. Mr Wyld, Monty Eliot, Arthur & Nela Du Cane dined with us—& with Nelly Alderson & Sophy we were 8—& had a pleasant evening.
