1 March 1897 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 1st March [1897]. I painted a short time in the morning & then Maria came to speak to me. She was in a dreadfully nervous state because she wanted to speak to Arthur. She had written to ask him to see her & he had promised to go to her yesterday & had not done so– I advised her to go to his house at once but she was so nervous about it that I offered to accompany her. We went off to Half Moon St in a cab. Arthur was still in bed but I went up to his room & asked him to see Maria & to quiet her. He would not have her up to his room—but finally arranged to come to my house at 1—so we returned there & I returned to the studio. Maria sat in the drawing room & waited. Blanche came in to ask me & Nelly to dine with her this eveng & we accepted. Arthur came as he promised & was very kind & gentle to Maria & she was very pleased. Her errand was to thank him for having used his influence with Mr Bircham with regard to his offer to take Louis DC. into partnership—wh however had come to nothing & it seems now there may be a chance of it. Maria hurried home to meet Ola who is coming up to town from Salisbury in order to go down tomorrow to Windsor to see the Empress Frederick. At 3 I went out driving—& went to see how Maria was. Found Ola had telegraphed she wd not arrive till 6—so I persuaded Maria to drive with me & I went to see Lady Gregory who was kept in by a bad cold. Got home at 5 & sent Maria home. Nelly & I dined at 17 Cav. Sqr.
