5 June 1897 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Saturday. 5th June [1897]. I wrote a letter of Jubilee congratulation to the Queen—feeling that it was my duty to do so—after having been her ambassadress. Worked in studio morning. Very hot day. Sat in garden. Nellie returned from London at 5 & brought Miss Oswell the typist with her to stay for her Whitsun holidays. After tea I accompanied Arthur & Arthur Du Cane down to the river & watched them fish—but they caught nothing. It was a lovely warm evening. We watched a snipe drumming over our heads & the larks soaring & heard them sing the Cuckoo’s note.
