17 July 1897 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Saturday. 17th [July 1897]. At 11 I started off in the van, old Battrick driving for Blandford & met the 12.18 train from Templecombe by which my brother in law Edgar Layard arrived from Budleigh Salterton. Glad to see him tho’ sorry my 2 days perfect quiet are come to an end. It does me good to be quite alone sometimes. He is so like & yet so unlike to Henry. The same type of head, silvery white hair & pink complexion—but entirely wanting in the strong look & genius of his brother– He is full of talk & a good deal of boasting of all he has & does. But very affect. & kindly. We got to Bere abt 2 & had lunch & sat & talked—I working on carving till 6 when we dined & then went to Cobb’s hatch to fish. I caught a fish just over 2 lbs. Edgar hooked 2 smaller which we put back. We came home at 9. Played besique. Had tea at 10—& bed soon after.
