4 September 1897 — Salce, Belluno
Saturday. 4th [September 1897]. Hotter than ever. Painted. Abt 2 a tremendous storm came on. Continuous rolling thunder—wind & literally sheets of rain. All shutters had to be closed & we sat almost in the dark & had to shift from one end to the other of the hall to get away from the water which drifted in under the doors & windows. By abt 6 it was over—& quite cold but the sun came out. The whole country round seemed under water & we could hear the river Piave roaring in the distance. There was no walking out so we sat in & read & worked.
