11 September 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 11th [September 1897]. Busy day getting things unpacked &c. Got a letter from Lady Vivian saying she is coming here next week to stay with me– Went out in gondola after tea to get a few flowers at the Eden’s garden. I was beginning to prepare for dinner when the servant came to say a Princess wanted to see me. I fancied it must be Pss Yturbide whom I had seen in the distance. When I went down to the drawing room it was dusk & not easy to recognize any one & to my surprise who should it be but the Hereditary Pss of Saxe Meiningen! The Empress Frederick’s eldest daughter. She was delighted at my surprise—& said that seeing the shutters open she had come in to see me– The Empress had told me that the Princess was coming to the Lido for bathing—but I had forgotten it. I asked her to come to tea tomorrow. Dined alone– Was driven to go early to bed by the quantities of mosquitoes wh tormented me–
