13 September 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 13th September [1897]. I went at 11 o’cl to the English church to see what is being done there. Was met by Mr Carey the Chaplain. Mr Woods came down from Vittorio on purpose to meet me there but having hurt his knee bycicling he went back without seeing me. I went afterwards to Moses of the Tower (Rietti) to see for some columns for an organ loft—saw some I thought might do & made a note of them. Went out before tea for an hour to the Piazza. Came back at 3 & found 2 ladies at the door waiting to see me, a Mrs Balfour & Lady Mary Currie friends of Mrs Rates. Agreeable people. Later had a visit from Mr Montalba—& also Miss Paget a most gentleman like young woman—a writer & clever—dressed as much like a man as possible, very mannish in her movements & rather plain in the face. She lives at Florence with a Miss Anstruther Thompson who is here now & ill. Old General de Horsey dined with me & sat talking very agreeably till past ten oclock.
