9 November 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 9th November [1897]. Typed & wrote in the morning. In the afternoon I went out in gondola & was then informed that we had had a near touch of losing the ferro of the gondola. That thieves had been at it in the night and that it is supposed they had been disturbed & unable to carry it off. I remembered having heard a noise under my window last night as I happened to be awake some time. I sent the gondolier to the police & was told in answer, that they were not responsible for the canal & had no police on it after dark. I was so annoyed at this that I sent to ask the Consul to come & speak abt it. Clara & Ellen Montalba came to tea with us– Reading aloud in the evening.
