13 November 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 13th [November 1897]. Packed & prepared for my start for Trent. Mrs Eden came in for a few moments to bid me goodbye & to say she will look after Nela in my absence. Nela accompanied me to the station & I left by the 2 train. At Vicenza Marchese Guiccioli met me & brought me a parcel of silk which I wanted to show to the Empress. At Ala the Austrian frontier we had to pass the customs & got to Trent just before 8. The Empress footman met me & hustled across from the station to the Hotel Trent where H.M. is staying & said she sent word I was to go to supper at 8.15—& it was then 15 to 8. I hastily made a toilette & flew down to H.M.’s rooms. I had 2 rooms on the 2nd floor just over H.M.—the same that we had when Henry & I were here to see H.M. 5 years ago. I found Count Seckendorff & Herr von Wedel, Fraülein von Faber & Baroness von Verschür all old acquaintances. We had a short supper & then sat talking—while H.M. knitted & then at 10 exactly she rose & dismissed us & we retired to bed.
