27 January 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 27th [January 1898]. Called as usual at 7 & got my letters at 8.30. One from Nelly saying Arthur was going on well but that he had sent her to Bere to do something for him. He has a nurse who wrote her excellent reports. There was another letter from my sister Connie with quite a contrary story—most alarming. I was bewildered—but I at once telegraphed to my sister Blanche “How is Arthur shall I come.” I arranged my papers at once in case I was told to come & did not go out. At 5 came the answer “Best to come.” My maid was in bed with Influenza—but we got a box & Nela & I packed it between us. Regina helped & even William the footman. Annie gave him instructions from her bed & he solemnly walked into my room opened the drawers & gave me different things to pack. By 8 oclock all was ready packed & we went to the station & left by 11.15 train for Milan. Nela had got the tickets from Cook’s office & we had sleeping berths.
