3 February 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 3rd [February 1898]. I walked to Jermyn St to get Arthur a knitted vest & on to Half Moon Street. I found Eda Alderson there. I was allowed to see Arthur & had rather an affecting meeting. The Dr has told him he will always be an invalid & I saw he felt it keenly. He spoke to me about it & said he hoped to get to Bere & perhaps to fish and that we must see after the flowers & garden together, for that was more our work & Nellie has no turn that way. He spoke of his illness—& I told him how sorry I was not to have been with him—he said “It would not have altered anything”– I said no—but I might have been with you. I saw tears glistening in his eyes & he gave my hand a long pressure– He said he had suffered a great deal but was now free from pain—but I could imagine what it had been to get on to the table for the operation. I told him I knew it too well for I had twice had to do it myself– His voice was weak & it was not easy to catch what he said & I did not stay long– It was most trying– I walked home with Nelly & Eda to lunch at 1– Nelly went back to Half Moon St. Eda & I walked to Cav. Sqr but Blanche being out we walked on to 26 Pk Crescent to see Maria who was at home. Connie was with her– Eda & I went back to Savile Row in a cab to tea—& then Eda went back to dine with her aunt Molly Alderson. Nelly came in late for dinner.
