5 February 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 5th [February 1898]. Rhuvon Guest arrived last night having been telegraphed for on the Dr’s advice & saw his father in the morng. I went up to Half Moon Street & got there just as he came down from his father’s room– He was fearfully moved—& I was unable to help shedding tears to see this strong man cry tho’ he turned away. The tears fell on the parquet. Father & son are so devoted to each other. Eda Alderson came then & she & I went out together. I went to the dentist & Eda returned to her Aunt’s & leaves town today. I went home to lunch alone & then went in a cab to see Mrs Arthur Hanson in a lodging in Bryanston St. I found her on her sofa & she held forth to me on the wonderful cure that had been effected on her by the Christian Scientists—merely thro’ Prayer. She has long been ill with internal tumour & wd not see a Dr but has been prayed over the last 3 years. At last her daughters threatened these Scientists with a lawsuit & they gave their consent to her seeing a Dr. An operation was attempted abt a month ago—& it was found to be impossible as the thing had been left too long—18 months ago it wd have been easy– Since the last 10 days she has lost all pain & now actually believes she is cured & is quite happy. She tried to convert me to her way of belief. I argued a little with her against it but I think it is happier for her to be able to think she is getting well & to have so much hope. All her arguments were purile & almost insane. I went home– Nela, a Twin & Connie came—also Maria & Ruth—& then Blanche.
