2 March 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 2nd March [1898]. I wrote letters & did not go out. Had a talk with Jane & decided not to try to get a butler but to let William try & manage with a boy under him. Lady Gregory came to lunch with me. She had seen Lady Blake with whom Wraight had once lived & she said he was an excellent servant if only he could keep sober—& thought I was well rid of him with out anything worse having happened. After lunch we took a cab & went to Southwark to see Mrs Hills at the Board School. Coming away we were caught in a hail storm before we could find a cab. We separated & I went up to see Maria who was at home & seemed very feeble. I came home to tea at 5. Duncannon came to see me & also Dacre Du Cane & Rhuvon Guest. I went to dine with Connie & Charlie Eliot & met there Christian their son & his wife whose acquaintance I had not yet made & also old Captain Jessop & a young Mr Elliot. Came home early.
