7 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 7th [April 1898]. I went out shopping in the morning being anxious to buy a wicker porter’s chair to send Maria that she might sit in it on her balcony when the weather is fine. I went to Blanche’s shop in Brook St & saw Miss Jeffery & settled some matters for her. Went to see Arthur. Had a headache & rested in the afternoon. I opened the cage & let the bullfinch “Jackie” out for a fly as I often use to do. The poor little bird who is getting old & is rather feeble flew on to Bibi the greater parrots cage. Bibi made a dart & caught Jackie by the claw & held on– At last I made her let go—but poor Jackie was badly hurt & one little claw was nearly torn off. However he seemed to recover & stood on one leg & I hope is going to get thro’ it.
