6 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 6th [April 1898]. I was sitting at my desk when the small boy who helps the servants below came in & standing close to me said “Please I wish to leave this place.” “What for” I said. “Because I wish to ’list & be a soldier” he answered. Oh! I said they won’t take such a small boy as you for a soldier”– Yes he said, “I wish to be a drummer boy same as my two brothers.” I had no answer to make to this & told him he must first get Lady Thompson’s permission as she placed him with me– So every servant in the house is leaving me 1 by 1—& I felt that the last rat was leaving the ship before it sinks! It is almost comic. Lady Margaret Jenkins came to lunch with me—& then when she left I walked to Half Moon Street to see Arthur– Nellie & I took a walk. I went to see Maria & walked her to Regent’s Park & then hurried home to tea to see Mrs Hill the schoolmistress. She has asked me to give her money on some securities she has. I am advised not to do this so I lent or gave her a small sum without it. Miss Oswell came later & we worked at Henry’s MS, she staying to dinner.
