9 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 9th April [1898]. Miss Oswell came again & we worked. After luncheon I went to see Arthur. As he had a visitor I went to S. Audley St to see Mr & Mrs Rate who have just returned from Cannes. Sat some time with them & then returned to see Arthur. He was playing bésique with Mrs Jellicoe so Nellie & I went for a walk. We went to call on old Miss Seymour. Found her in a pink flannel dressing gown. She was very funny. The conversation turned on the German Royal family. She abused the Empress Frederick & even the Emp. Frederick. She said she had been the great friend of the old Emp. William—but I think that her memory is confused abt details—& I did not take all she said au serieux. Sophy Palmer made an unexpected appearance at tea time—being in town for 2 or 3 days. I walked with her to Mount St where she is staying at her brother Lord Selborne’s house & then returned to work with Miss Oswell. Nelly returned to dinner. But Miss O, & I worked on in my bedroom till 10.30.
