15 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 15th April [1898]. I wrote letters all the morning. Directly after lunch I went to see Arthur & sat a little while with him. At 3 Blanche’s open carriage called for me & Nellie & I drove together. We called for Maria but she was not feeling very well & did not come. Nellie returned to ½ M. St & I home at 5. Connie came to tea & Lady Stephenson came to meet her to chose out some of my old fans for an Art Exhibition they are getting up. Sir Frederick Burton came to see me—looking wonderfully well & amazingly young. When they were all gone I walked up to Park Crescent to ask after Maria I found she had only a passing indisposition. I walked home—dined alone—read & worked. Am reading Waliszewski’s “Pierre le Grand” & am disgusted at the description of the man—a real brute– I had to turn over many pages not being able to read it. The news from Spain still uncertain– Every day gained is a hope for peace. In the American Senate—they have insulted Spain & the members fought & behaved in a most undignified way!
