14 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 14th [April 1898]. The news from the U.S. look threatening. Still one can hardly believe in war. Spain has granted a truce to Cuba. The fear is that the U.S. President has let the Senate get out of hand & that he cannot restrain the people who are wild to fight. America is itching to fight someone—& wants a good set down. Who will give it her? Miss Oswell came to ask me questions abt the bindings of Mama’s journals which she has typed—& I kept her to lunch with me. She left directly after. I walked to Half Moon Street to see Arthur who was sitting in his chair & quite cheery. Nellie had her Aunt Molly Alderson calling on her. We 3 walked together to Gros. St where Molly left us. We went to the London Library to get books for Arthur & then I came home & went to ½ Moon St. I had a talk this morning to my brother Monty about my household difficulties & he advises me to get parlour maids. He says they are easier for a lady to manage & are often excellent servants. I went to dine with Mr & Mrs Rate at 9 S. Audley Street. They were quite alone & I had a pleasant chat with them & came home early.
